04/01/2022 West Basin and the Water Replenishment District Celebrate Earth Month With Water Industry Careers Panel

West Basin Municipal District (West Basin) and the Water Replenishment District (WRD) are teaming up to present the 2022 Water Industry Careers Guest Panel, featuring a video library spotlighting two career pathways in the water industry. The program will culminate with a live panel online discussion on April 29, in which high school students will have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about career paths, training programs, and other job opportunities in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) fields, with a special focus on jobs in the water industry. The West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) Board of Directors announced that Gregory R. Reed, P.E. will serve as the new General Manager of the District. 03/17/2022 West Basin Receives $3.8 Million In Federal Funding For Recycled Water Projects

West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) has received $3.79 million in federal funding for its North Gardena Recycled Water Lateral and Mills Memorial Park Recycled Water Lateral projects. Project funding was made possible through the support of Rep. Maxine Waters, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and Sen. Alex Padilla. Through their combined efforts, West Basin was able to secure key funding in the final Fiscal Year 2022 Energy and Water Appropriations measure, which was signed by President Biden last week. West Basin’s two recycled water projects together received the highest funding amount of any California-based Army Corps construction project of its type to be included in the appropriations bill. 02/02/2022 New Grass Replacement+ Program Launches

Eligible residents in the West Basin Municipal Water District service area can now apply for water-saving incentives worth up to $27,000 through the District’s new Grass Replacement+ program. Grass Replacement+ offers $5 for every square foot of lawn removed, up to $25,000 total. Other incentives available for a limited time include a free drought-resistant tree and free custom landscape design (an additional value of up to $2,000). Today the West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) announced the launch of its 2022 Water is Life student art contest and called on students in the service area to inspire water use efficiency with their creative designs. The West Basin Municipal Water District will host a free, online water and drought education festival on Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. By joining the interactive Water Harvest S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Adventure, participants will learn about precious water resources, especially important as California faces an increasingly severe drought. In partnership with the City of Malibu and Los Angeles County Water Works District 29, the West Basin Municipal Water District will host a free online firescaping workshop on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 6:00 P.M. The class will focus on the fire-prone Malibu and Topanga areas, but is open to all residents in the West Basin service area. 08/10/2021 West Basin Board Releases General Manager from Contract

At a Special Meeting of the West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) Board of Directors on August 10, 2021 the Board held a closed session conference with legal counsel to discuss a swift resolution regarding the discipline, dismissal or release of a public employee. At the conclusion of the meeting, District counsel reported that the Board agreed to enter into a separation and release agreement with its General Manager Patrick Sheilds, which includes a termination of administrative paid leave effective August 10. 07/01/2021 West Basin Adopts Urban Water Management Plan

The West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) Board of Directors approved the District’s 2020 Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP), a strategic water resources planning guide that demonstrates West Basin’s ability to provide reliable water supplies to the region for the next 25 years. “West Basin continues to invest in a diverse water supply portfolio that meets the specific needs of the communities and industries that we serve,” said Board President Harold C. 05/25/2021 Student Winners Announced for 2021 Water is Life Art Contest

West Basin Municipal Water District announced the winners of its 2021 Water is Life student art contest. Local student artists created inspiring artwork that encourage others to conserve and use water more efficiently, especially important as California is facing drought conditions. Nearly 450 entries were received from students throughout the West Basin service area, with one grand prize winner and four honorable mentions being selected in each of the elementary, middle and high school categories. 03/22/2021 Sofi Stadium Recycled Water Project Receives Award for Excellence

In a virtual ceremony on March 22, the WateReuse Association presented the annual “Excellence in Action” Award to West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin), the City of Inglewood, and other project partners for the SoFi Stadium Recycled Water Project. West Basin, a provider of drinking and recycled water supplies for nearly 1 million people in coastal Los Angeles County, nominated SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park for the Excellence in Action Award. The annual award recognizes individuals and/or projects that are making significant contributions in support of greater adoption of water reuse. 03/02/2021 Now Accepting Registrations for FREE Rain Barrel Home Delivery Program

The West Basin Municipal Water District announced a new contactless delivery program to provide qualified District residents with free rain barrels worth approximately $100 per unit. The 55-gallon eco-friendly rain barrels help residents collect rainwater to use for landscaping and reduce urban runoff into local storm drains. One rain barrel can save up to 620 gallons per year. This year, 1,000 free rain barrels will be available for direct delivery to eligible homes. 10/09/2020 West Basin Recycled Water Project Wins 2020 Best Project Award

CARSON, Calif. – The West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) announced that one of its recycled water projects has earned a 2020 Regional Best Project Award in the Water/Environment category from Engineering News-Record (ENR). The District won the award for its Hyperion Secondary Effluent Pump Station Improvements (HSEPS) project, which was completed in 2019 and involved the construction of a new pump station and the installation of a three-megawatt emergency generator at the City of Los Angeles’ Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (Hyperion) in Playa Del Rey. CARSON, Calif. – West Basin has announced the hiring of Wendell Johnson, a professional engineer with more than 20 years of experience, to manage the District’s engineering department. Johnson is a California registered civil engineer with extensive experience in managing capital improvement programs and public works departments. 06/24/2020 Dominguez Technology Center Recognized for Recycled Water Innovation

CARSON, Calif. – Recycled water leaders from across the state gathered today in a virtual setting to honor the Dominguez Technology Center in Carson, CA for partnering on a project with West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) and other local agencies to convert its landscape irrigation system to use recycled water. The 300-acre industrial park, located adjacent to California State University, Dominguez Hills, uses locally-produced, recycled water from West Basin to irrigate the property’s sizable landscape, saving more than 40 million gallons of drinking water per year. 06/11/2020 West Basin Expands Recycled Water Use at Torrance Commerce Center

CARSON, Calif. – The West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) announced the completion of a new recycled water project at the Torrance Commerce Center (Center). The Center, which is located on the former Toyota North American Headquarters property, will use recycled water instead of drinking water to irrigate the landscape surrounding three new buildings. CARSON, Calif. – West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) announced the launch of its Change & Save program, a water savings device and rebate program designed to assist communities in West Basin’s service area that have historically lower water conservation program participation rates. The new program is aimed at helping participants reduce water consumption and save money. For a limited time, the District’s Change & Save program is offering eligible residents free water savings device kits and a $500 rebate for a qualifying high-efficiency clothes washer. CARSON, Calif. – The West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) announced its Water Bottle Filling Station Grant Program will return for another year with increased funding opportunities. Eligible public facilities can apply for a $1,000 grant to install indoor water bottle filling stations. New funding includes a larger, $2,000 grant for outdoor filling stations, which can cost more than indoor units. The popular program provides community members with access to safe, reliable drinking water and encourages users to refill personal, eco-friendly water bottles to reduce plastic waste. 06/25/2019 West Basin Increases Popular Grass Replacement Rebate to $3 per Square Foot

CARSON, Calif. – Beginning July 1, the West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) will add one dollar to the popular Turf Replacement Program rebate offered by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD). The extra dollar, approved by the West Basin Board of Directors, will increase the total rebate incentive for eligible applicants to $3 or more per square foot of grass removed. The District is also offering a free series of grass replacement classes to encourage residents and businesses of the West Basin service area to apply for the increased rebate. West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) recently started constructing one of the first ocean-water desalination demonstration facilities to utilize ocean protection technology at the source of intake and discharge. The facility is co-located at the Los Angeles Conservation Corps' SEA Lab education center in Redondo Beach and is part of West Basin's Water Reliability 2020 (WR2020) initiative to reduce dependence on unreliable imported water use in the South Bay from 66 percent to 33 percent by the year 2020.
